Salt-belt brutal
Boston gets one of the heaviest salt loads of any major U.S. metro. MassDOT and the city salt aggressively December through March; brine pre-treatment, plus rock salt during storms, plus repeated applications during nor'easter cycles. By year 8 most Boston cars have visible undercarriage rust; by year 12 the rust is structural — rocker panels softening, brake lines corroding, frame rails pitted. We see this every February when the cars that survived another winter finally hit the next major repair.
What this means for our pricing: Boston cars get a meaningful body-condition discount versus Sun Belt equivalents because more of the recoverable scrap is unusable steel. But the engine and transmission don't care about rust, so the drivetrain side of the offer stays normal. A 2010 Camry with a clean drivetrain pays well in Boston even if the rocker panels are rotted — we don't double-penalize.
Narrow streets, college turnover, alternate-side
Boston's streets are narrow and old. Beacon Hill, North End, Charlestown, South End, parts of Allston/Brighton — wheel-lift trucks won't fit. Almost every Boston pickup is a flatbed, and we coordinate around the city's resident-parking-zone schedules so the car can be staged for pickup without violating zone rules.
College turnover is a big factor. Cambridge (Harvard, MIT), Allston (BU), Chestnut Hill (BC), Northeastern, and the broader student/grad-student population rotate cars in and out at year-end. We see lots of 8-12 year-old commuter sedans being retired at the end of grad-school stints or post-degree relocations.
