Did you know that more than 25 million tons of recycled materials mainly come from old cars? Did you also know that many of which had owners who received cash for junk cars?

Cash for cars programs provide 40% of ferrous metal for the scrap processing industry. If you are planning to visit a cars auto salvage business in the near future, here are some unexpected things you may find.

Police Cars
Retired police cars with high-mileage and damage are often seen at public auctions all around the United States. Surprisingly, they can also end up at salvage yards as well and are often times in good condition. Most of the time, these vehicles were simply replaced with newer, more efficient models.

Trolley and Subway Cars
Growing as a popular trend, bars and diners alike are using old trolley and subway cars as part of their design. It is very costly to scrap or recycle subway cars because they require additional effort to move because of their size and weight. On average, they weigh about 18 tons each and must be stripped and cut down before being crushed and scrapped.

1926 Vauxhall 30-98 Race Car
In 2010, the British race car was found in a salvage yard in the U.S. It had not yet been crushed but was “junked” under a tarp before being discovered. The race car was brought to the U.S. by a British soldier who was stationed there during World War II. It had been a track winner but was not registered as a historic automobile when it came to the U.S. in 1948.

Buses and Fire Trucks
Buses have an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years. Before being crushed and scrapped, you may find them at a salvage yard. It is typical for these vehicles to be bought from the salvage yard and re-purposed for a variety of things, such as for personal transportation, motor home conversion, and even as homes.

Military Goods and Vehicles
Collectors of military goods often look to salvage yards for some of the best finds. Today, you find everything from British tanks to Czech and Russian trucks. Often times, the government holds these items for auction and the items that don’t sell are taken to salvage yards instead.

Still wondering if you should junk your car? Do some research on scrap prices for cars to give you a better idea of how much cash for cars that no longer run was paid out. Each year, 13 million new cars are made from automobile recycling from both the U.S. and Canada. Consider the benefits of salvage yards and get cash for cars you no longer need.
